School phobia is your child refusing school despite no obvious reason: no bullying, no learning difficulty, no specific event. The child usually has somatic complaints (stomach aches, headaches) that vanish on weekends and intensify Sunday night. It's almost always an anxiety condition: separation anxiety, social anxiety, or a specific school-related fear, wearing a school-phobia label. The clinical fix is graduated return-to-school with parent and school staff aligned. Bia structures the return plan, identifies the underlying anxiety, teaches parents what to do when the Sunday-night refusal starts, and supports the morning-by-morning rebuild.
Common signs of school phobia
- Refusal to attend school, intensifying Sunday night
- Somatic complaints (stomach aches, headaches) that disappear when home
- Separation anxiety symptoms at the school gate
- Fear of specific elements: teachers, lunch hour, bathroom, PE
- Panic-like symptoms before or during the school day
- Improving symptoms during school breaks

Retraining the Brain
Read the science behind recovery
Anxiety is the brain's natural alarm process out of balance. When we avoid a trigger, the brain learns the threat is real, and will trigger more discomfort next time, creating a vicious loop called the avoidance cycle.
Bia uses ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) to help the brain unlearn fear through small, incremental exercises. Instead of reacting to triggers, build skills with proactive practice.
Bia provides pre-built recovery plans made of 80+ interactive activities for you and your teen to complete at your own pace.

Understanding school phobia in children
School refusal in teenagers often grows out of anxiety: social fears, panic, pressure about grades, or a fear that started years ago. From the outside it can look like laziness, but for your teen it feels impossible.
Every day at home makes going back harder, and falling behind on schoolwork and friendships can become its own source of worry. The way back is gradual, planned steps.
Bia helps your teen build a step-by-step plan back to school, and lets you share their progress with a counselor or teacher so everyone works from the same plan.

Frequently asked questions about school phobia
My teen says school is pointless. Could it be anxiety?
It can be. Teens often describe anxiety as boredom or dislike, because that is easier to say. If the avoidance keeps growing, it is worth looking at the fear underneath it.
Should we switch to homeschooling?
It is an understandable thought, but leaving school often lets the anxiety spread. It is usually worth trying a gradual return plan first, with support from the school.
Can the school see my teen's progress?
Only if you choose to share it. You can invite a counselor or teacher to follow your teen's progress, and stop sharing at any time.
What age group is Bia for?
Bia for Teens is designed for ages 13 to 17. Your teen gets the standard layout with mature content hidden, and you keep the parent PIN. If your teen would rather manage their own account, the adult version lets them hide mature content in settings.
Can I use Bia by myself?
Yes. Bia is designed to work as a self-guided tool. It provides a personalized recovery plan, interactive lessons, and step-by-step guided exercises for practicing evidence-based recovery techniques.
Can I use Bia with a therapist?
Yes. Bia provides a provider portal where therapists can monitor your progress, create custom exercises, and support your recovery journey.
How much time does it take?
Individual sessions are short. We recommend 10–15 minutes a day, 3 to 4 times a week. Bia builds a personalized step-by-step journey based on your unique needs, so completing the full journey is different for everyone. Typically, a journey includes over 55 exercises and 19 lessons across 9 milestones.
