Emetophobia is the specific fear of vomiting, your own or others. It feeds itself: anticipatory anxiety triggers nausea, the nausea confirms the fear, and avoidance (of food, travel, sick people) makes the fear bigger over time. Bia will teach you the science behind phobia and help you practice evidence-proven skills in incremental steps. Bia uses graduated exposure to stimuli (words, then images, then sensations), interoceptive exposure, and response prevention to break the avoidance and checking patterns that keep the phobia alive. You set the pace, you are in control of your recovery.
Common signs of emetophobia
- Anticipatory anxiety before meals or in public
- Hyper-awareness of stomach sensations
- Fear of food poisoning, pregnancy, or others being sick
- Avoidance of restaurants, travel, sick relatives, or specific foods
- Checking behaviors (looking up food, taking medication preemptively)
- Intrusive thoughts about vomiting

Retraining the Brain
Read the science behind recovery
Anxiety is the brain's natural alarm process out of balance. When we avoid a trigger, the brain learns the threat is real, and will trigger more discomfort next time, creating a vicious loop called the avoidance cycle.
Bia uses ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) to help the brain unlearn fear through small, incremental exercises. Instead of reacting to triggers, build skills with proactive practice.
Bia provides pre-built recovery plans made of 80+ interactive activities for you and your teen to complete at your own pace.

Understanding emetophobia in children
Emetophobia is the phobia of vomit or vomiting. It is a common and particularly difficult phobia to live with. Emetophobia is much more than a sensitivity to vomit. It is a mental disorder similar to OCD that can cause significant distress, nausea, malnutrition, stomach aches, school and food avoidance, social anxiety, panic attacks, and more.
A fear of vomiting often starts in childhood and can become more entrenched in the teenage years, as avoidance spreads to school, food, friends and travel. The sooner it is treated, the less room it has to grow.
Bia for Teens uses the same evidence-based approach as our adult program. Your teen works through lessons and chooses their own exposure steps, while you keep the parent PIN and can follow their progress.

Frequently asked questions about emetophobia
My teen hides how much this affects them. Is that common?
Very. Many teens feel embarrassed about a fear of vomiting and keep it to themselves, so the first signs parents notice are often eating less, missed events or time off school.
Will my teen be shown videos of people vomiting?
Only when they are ready, and only if they choose to. Practice starts with words and cartoons and builds up gradually, your teen decides when to take each step, and mature movie clips are hidden on teen accounts.
How involved do I need to be?
Less than with a younger child. Your teen does the practice on their own, and you keep the parent PIN, so you can follow their progress and approve purchases, bookings and settings.
What age group is Bia for?
Bia for Teens is designed for ages 13 to 17. Your teen gets the standard layout with mature content hidden, and you keep the parent PIN. If your teen would rather manage their own account, the adult version lets them hide mature content in settings.
Can I use Bia by myself?
Yes. Bia is designed to work as a self-guided tool. It provides a personalized recovery plan, interactive lessons, and step-by-step guided exercises for practicing evidence-based recovery techniques.
Can I use Bia with a therapist?
Yes. Bia provides a provider portal where therapists can monitor your progress, create custom exercises, and support your recovery journey.
How much time does it take?
Individual sessions are short. We recommend 10–15 minutes a day, 3 to 4 times a week. Bia builds a personalized step-by-step journey based on your unique needs, so completing the full journey is different for everyone. Typically, a journey includes over 55 exercises and 19 lessons across 9 milestones.
