School phobia is your child refusing school despite no obvious reason: no bullying, no learning difficulty, no specific event. The child usually has somatic complaints (stomach aches, headaches) that vanish on weekends and intensify Sunday night. It's almost always an anxiety condition: separation anxiety, social anxiety, or a specific school-related fear, wearing a school-phobia label. The clinical fix is graduated return-to-school with parent and school staff aligned. Bia structures the return plan, identifies the underlying anxiety, teaches parents what to do when the Sunday-night refusal starts, and supports the morning-by-morning rebuild.
Common signs of school phobia
- Refusal to attend school, intensifying Sunday night
- Somatic complaints (stomach aches, headaches) that disappear when home
- Separation anxiety symptoms at the school gate
- Fear of specific elements: teachers, lunch hour, bathroom, PE
- Panic-like symptoms before or during the school day
- Improving symptoms during school breaks

Retraining the Brain
Read the science behind recovery
Anxiety is the brain's natural alarm process out of balance. When we avoid a trigger, the brain learns the threat is real, and will trigger more discomfort next time, creating a vicious loop called the avoidance cycle.
Bia uses ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) to help the brain unlearn fear through small, incremental exercises. Instead of reacting to triggers, build skills with proactive practice.
Bia provides pre-built recovery plans made of 80+ interactive activities for you and your child to complete at your own pace.

Understanding school phobia in children
School refusal is when anxiety makes it very hard for a child to go to school or stay there. It is not defiance. For your child, the morning dread, the tears and the stomachaches are real.
Missing school brings quick relief, which is why it tends to grow. The longer a child stays away, the harder going back feels. The way back is gradual, planned steps, with you and the school working together.
Bia gives your child a step-by-step plan back to the classroom, from walking past the school to a full day, with lessons that help you handle hard mornings and work with teachers.

Frequently asked questions about school phobia
Is my child just trying to get out of school?
Usually not. Children who refuse school are most often avoiding the anxiety school brings, not the work. Treating it as fear, rather than bad behavior, is what helps them go back.
Should I keep my child home until they feel better?
Staying home eases the worry today but tends to make tomorrow harder. Most children do better with a gradual plan that keeps them connected to school, even for part of the day at first.
Can Bia work with my child's school?
Yes. You can share your child's progress with a teacher or school counselor, so everyone is working on the same steps, and stop sharing at any time.
What age group is Bia for?
Bia for Kids is designed for children aged 5 to 12, with a parent guiding the way. For ages 13 to 17, Bia for Teens gives your teen the standard layout while you keep the parent PIN.
Can I use Bia by myself?
Yes. Bia is designed to work as a self-guided tool. It provides a personalized recovery plan, interactive lessons, and step-by-step guided exercises for practicing evidence-based recovery techniques.
Can I use Bia with a therapist?
Yes. Bia provides a provider portal where therapists can monitor your progress, create custom exercises, and support your recovery journey.
How much time does it take?
Individual sessions are short. We recommend 10–15 minutes a day, 3 to 4 times a week. Bia builds a personalized step-by-step journey based on your unique needs, so completing the full journey is different for everyone. Typically, a journey includes over 55 exercises and 19 lessons across 9 milestones.
