Crisis Monitoring
Crisis Monitoring At Bia
Bia employs crisis monitoring across the website and app to help alert users to potential mental health crisis.
On select input forms throughout Bia, automated keyword and phrase matching runs whenever the user enters text into the form. This matching occurs on the user's device so no data is transmitted over the network. When crisis keywords or phrases are detected the users flow is interrupted and a pop-up is displayed, presenting them with 24/7 available crisis resources.
No keyword or phrase matching approach can be 100% accurate. This filter can be avoided, and it may trigger on non-crisis related terms. For example, someone entering "I am not thinking about killing myself" may trigger the detection because the phrase "thinking about killing myself" appears. At Bia, we have decided this false match is acceptable, as users can dismiss the pop up and continue working.
Alerting parents and therapists: If a user enters crisis terms in their journal on Bia, they will receive the pop-up discussed above. If they continue and save this journal entry, two things can occur.
- If the account if a children's account, Bia sends an automated email to the parent email alerting them that crisis terms were detected.
- If the account is connected with a therapist, we add a note to the therapists portal that crisis terms were detected. We do not share the terms or the journal contents.
Bia is not a medical tool or a substitute for therapy. However, we take our role in anxiety recovery seriously and that responsibility is reflected in our implementation of crisis monitoring across the site.
